Sachem Head Capital Management LP Boosts Stake in Ionic Digital

Sachem Head Capital Management acquired 1,330,317 additional shares of Ionic Digital Inc on September 30, 2026, at $80.33 per share, increasing its stake by 41.97%. The transaction brought the New York-based investment firm's total holdings to 4,500,125 shares, representing 9.99% of the bitcoin mining company's outstanding stock.

The purchase represents a 2.17% addition to Sachem Head's $4.82 billion portfolio, where Ionic Digital now accounts for 7.34% of total assets. Founded in 2012 by Scott D. Ferguson, a former portfolio manager at Pershing Square Capital Management, Sachem Head is known for taking concentrated, value-oriented positions and often seeks board representation as an activist investor.

Ionic Digital emerged from the bankruptcy restructuring of Celsius Network, which filed for Chapter 11 protection in July 2022 with $4.3 billion in assets against $5.5 billion in liabilities, including $4.72 billion in user deposits. The cryptocurrency lending platform had frozen customer accounts the previous month. The bankruptcy plan, approved by approximately 98% of creditors, included distribution of over $3 billion in cryptocurrency and fiat to creditors and the creation of Ionic Digital, which emerged from bankruptcy in early 2024.

The company conducted a direct listing on Nasdaq on July 28, 2026, with a reference price of $53 per share. Prior to the listing, Ionic Digital raised $400 million in June 2026 from institutional investors who purchased Series A convertible preferred stock at $53 per share. Celsius initially planned for the reorganized entity to engage in both bitcoin mining and staking operations, but shifted to focus solely on mining after the SEC expressed skepticism about staking activities.

As of October 15, 2026, Ionic Digital trades at $67.33, down 16.18% from the September transaction price but up 34.66% from its listing reference price. The stock has gained 7.04% year-to-date. The company operates bitcoin mining facilities with specialized ASIC hardware, with operations managed by Hut 8 Corp.

Diversification into AI Infrastructure

Beyond traditional bitcoin mining, Ionic Digital has diversified into AI and high-performance computing infrastructure. The company's flagship asset is a 234 MW facility in Ward County, Texas, which has been leased to Nscale under a 126-month triple-net agreement for use as a hyperscale AI campus. The lease represents total contracted revenues of approximately $1.95 billion, potentially rising to $2.6 billion with expansion, with monthly fixed payments that commenced in August 2026.

Challenging Market Environment

The investment comes amid difficult conditions for bitcoin mining operations. Bitcoin currently trades around $83,000 to $83,400, down approximately 27-28% from year-ago levels when it ranged between $113,000 and $115,000 in October 2025. Mining difficulty as of October 2026 stands at approximately 132.72 trillion, down 15-19% from the October 2025 peak of 155.97 trillion, though hashrate has recovered to around 950 exahashes per second to 1 zettahash per second.

Bitcoin mining hashprice has recovered to approximately $40 per petahash per second per day in early October 2026, up from a June 2026 low of $27.70, but remains well below the October 2025 peak of around $49-50 per petahash per second.
