- Accuracy before speed. Being right takes precedence over being first. Deadline pressure does not override verification.
- Attribution. Facts, figures and quotes taken from another outlet's original reporting are credited to that outlet, with a link where possible. Another organization's exclusive is never presented as this site's own work.
- Fairness to subjects. A person or organization facing a significant negative allegation is given a fair opportunity to respond before publication, wherever practicable. A response that is provided is represented accurately.
- No fabrication. The site does not invent quotes, sources, statistics or events. This rule has no exceptions.
- Editorial independence. Coverage is not for sale. Advertisers and sponsors do not influence story selection or framing. Paid material is labeled as paid.
- Care with sensitive material. In covering crime, tragedy and conflict, and in writing about vulnerable people including minors, the public interest in publication is weighed against the potential harm. Identifying detail that serves no public-interest purpose is withheld.
- Context. Facts are presented with the context required to understand them. A true fact arranged to create a false impression is treated as a failure of accuracy.
- Conflicts of interest. Editorial staff disclose personal, financial or organizational conflicts connected to their coverage. Where a conflict cannot be managed, the staff member is removed from the story.
- Accountability. Anyone may challenge what the site publishes. A challenge reaches a human editor and receives a reply.
