Cedar Lake police release video of car wanted in hit-and-run that seriously injured 15-year-old boy

Cedar Lake police have released surveillance footage of a vehicle sought in connection with a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a 15-year-old boy Thursday night in the northwest Indiana town.

The incident occurred just after 7:45 p.m. as the teen was running across West 133rd Avenue near Oakdale. According to police, a driver struck the boy and continued westbound toward Wicker Avenue without stopping. Officers and fire officials responded to the scene, and the victim was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

The surveillance video shows the suspect vehicle traveling from right to left at the time of the collision. Investigators believe it to be a gray or silver Kia Soul with damage to the front driver's side and possibly the windshield.

Pedestrian Safety Concerns

Cedar Lake, located approximately 45 minutes south of Chicago in Lake County, is home to more than 14,000 residents. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety, particularly for teenagers during evening hours when visibility is reduced. National safety research indicates that 75 percent of teen pedestrian fatalities occur between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., placing this incident within the highest-risk timeframe.

Teenagers ages 15 to 19 face particular vulnerability as pedestrians, accounting for half of all pedestrian deaths among children 19 and under, with death rates approximately twice those of younger children. Studies show that 40 percent of teens report having been hit or nearly hit by a vehicle while walking.

Hit-and-Run Statistics and Legal Consequences

Hit-and-run crashes represent a significant portion of pedestrian fatalities nationwide, with approximately one in four pedestrian deaths resulting from drivers who flee the scene. In such cases, the vehicle that struck the pedestrian is the fleeing vehicle 94 percent of the time.

Under Indiana law, leaving the scene of an accident that results in serious bodily injury is classified as a Level 6 felony, carrying potential penalties of six months to 2.5 years in prison and fines up to $10,000 if the driver is apprehended and convicted.

Cedar Lake police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 219-374-5416 ext. 1702 or email [email protected]. Authorities have not released additional details about the victim's condition or the ongoing investigation.
