Fatal Miami Cargo Plane Crash
Authorities in Florida are investigating why an Amazon cargo plane overran the runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, resulting in five fatalities and five injuries. The aircraft was operated by 21 Air, a North Carolina-based cargo carrier with a 24/7 operations center in Miami that flies Boeing 767 aircraft for companies including Amazon and DHL.
According to aviation analytics company Cirium, 21 Air operates eight Boeing 767 planes for Amazon Air, the retailer's cargo airline. The incident occurred during Labor Day weekend, causing significant disruptions to airport operations. More than 450 flights in and out of Miami International Airport were delayed or canceled as of Sunday night, with the crash prompting a roughly three-hour ground stop.
The National Transportation Safety Board is sending a team led by NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy to investigate the incident. Runway excursions, when airplanes go off the runway, are the most common type of incident involving airplanes worldwide, according to data from the International Air Transport Association. The runways at Miami International Airport are not equipped with Arrestor Beds, also known as an Engineered Material Arresting System, a pad of crushable material placed at the end of runways to stop aircraft from overrunning.
Trump Envoys Make First Wartime Visit to Ukraine
President Trump's envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, made their first wartime visit to Kyiv after talks in Moscow, offering no breakthrough as Ukraine pushes for renewed peace talks and more air defenses. This marks the first official wartime visit to Kyiv by the envoys, coming more than four and a half years after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began.
The visit follows trilateral peace talks held in Abu Dhabi in January and February 2026, and in Geneva in February 2026. Jared Kushner was officially appointed as a Special Envoy for Peace Missions on February 19, 2026, serving alongside Steve Witkoff, who has served in diplomatic roles since 2025.
Historic Far-Right Victory in Germany
In Germany, the far-right Alternative for Germany party more than doubled its vote in a state election in Saxony-Anhalt, a result that could produce the country's first far-right regional government since Nazi Germany. In the 2021 Saxony-Anhalt election, the AfD received 20.8 percent of the vote. The party increased its support to 43.8 percent in the 2026 election, gaining 16 additional seats to reach 39 seats in the 83-member parliament.
Germany has not had a far-right or right-wing populist party leading a national, state, or major-city government in the modern era, making this election historically significant. Despite the dramatic gains, the AfD fell three seats short of the 42-seat majority needed to govern alone in the state parliament.
